1	c	Chopped Dates
1/2	c	Water
6	tb	Butter
1/2	c	Sugar
2		Eggs
1	ts	Vanilla
1 1/2	c	Flour
1	ts	Baking Powder
1	c	Brown Sugar

Mix the cup of chopped dates with 1/2 cup water and cook together until thickened. Beat the 6 tbls. butter with the 1/2 cup white sugar, add 2 egg yolks & the tsp. of vanilla. Beat very well. Sift 1 1/2 cups flour with the teaspoon of baking powder, and add to butter mixture. Mix thoroughly with hands. Spread in bottom of pan. Beat 2 egg whites stiff with 1 cup brown sugar. Spread over the date layer that is spread over the pastry layer. Spread the 1/2 cup of chopped nuts on top. Cook 50 minutes in a slow oven.
